ITHACA, NY — CULTURA Ithaca invites the community to FLANdango Latin@ American Dessert Competition on Saturday March 25 from 1-3 p.m. at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC) Gym. The event is FREE and open to the public. The event will include a competition for Best Flan, Best Non-Flan, as well as live performances, kids’ activities. The event is family-friendly and will include programming in Spanish and English. This year, the event will also be a fundraiser for the Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County’s Naturalization Drive.
The FLANdango has been held in the past and is a popular event as it features a friendly, though fierce, community competition for who can make the best flan, a creamy vanilla custard dessert that is technically challenging to prepare and beloved all over Latin America. In addition to the Best Flan category, there is also a category for Other Latin@ American Desserts, which can include cookies, cakes (Tres Leches is a popular choice), and other sweet treats. In order to accommodate other palates and dietary restrictions, gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options will be available.
Members of the community are invited to enter the competition. Official categories are:
Gluten/Dairy-Free or Vegan
Best Flan will be judged by a panel of guest celebrities, and the other two categories will be judged by popular vote. Baked goods (except for flan) will be sold as a fundraiser for the Naturalization Drive, a collection of funds to assist individuals to attain their U.S. residencies and other documentation.
The event is sponsored by Latina/o Civic Association of Tompkins County, Cornell Latina/o Studies Program, CU Dept. of Comparative Literature, CU Public Service Center, and Engaged Cornell.
