ITHACA, N.Y. — An Ithaca man was arrested in January after allegedly assaulting another man in a parking lot and robbing personal belongings from his backpack.

Gavin J. Mahoney, 50, was arrested by Ithaca Police on the afternoon of Jan. 2 after reportedly assaulting another man in parking lot of the Ithaca Wal-Mart.

Mahoney reportedly threw the victim against the outside wall of the Wal-Mart, then proceeded to pin him to the ground by kneeling on him. Court documents say Mahoney continued to hit the victim in the face and other parts of his body with a closed fist, causing a laceration over the victim’s left eye, which swelled and became black and blue.

Police say the victim attempted to defend himself by placing his hands over his face, which Mahoney allegedly continued to strike, causing a dislocation of his right ring finger.

After the defendant finished attacking the victim, records show he then stole a Gerber knife from a backpack the victim was wearing.

Mahoney was charged with third-degree robbery and third-degree assault on Feb. 17.
