No community is free from discrimination and bias. In its effort to diminish the harmful impact of discrimination, the Tompkins County Office of Human Rights (OHR) has worked to promote and protect human rights in Tompkins County since 1963.

Today, the OHR reaffirms its commitment to standing up against unlawful discrimination, bigotry, and hatred while asking community members to join us in making Tompkins County a beacon of hope and opportunity for all residents. “We have a lot of work to do, and we have to do it together,” says Karen Baer, Director of the Office of Human Rights.

Tompkins County residents are encouraged to contact OHR to report incidents of discrimination or bias by calling (607) 277-4080, or visiting the office located in downtown Ithaca at 120 W. MLK Jr. (State) Street. Office hours are Monday-Friday/8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. OHR staff is here to assist in the filing of complaints or making referrals to more appropriate state or federal agencies.

Likewise, Governor Andrew Cuomo has affirmed New York State’s commitment to valuing diversity and ending discrimination, saying, “New York serves as a beacon of hope and opportunity for all, and we will continue to stand up to those who seek to spread the politics of division, fear, and hate.”

Following two separate investigations into alleged hate crimes last week, the Governor also launched a toll-free hotline for New Yorkers to report incidents of bias and discrimination across the state. Anyone who has experienced discrimination or bias is encouraged to call the hotline at (888) 3923644. Office hours are Monday-Friday/9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
