ENFIELD,N.Y. — An elderly man and woman were robbed at gunpoint during a home invasion Saturday night in Enfield, New York State Police confirmed.

Benjamin Spradlin, 40, of Ithaca, has been charged with felony second-degree robbery after being arrested in the city of Ithaca around 7 p.m. Saturday.

“The door was unlocked, so the gunman just walked into their house and confronted them, demanded money, which they provided to him,” Sgt. Michael Soroka said.

The couple was not injured during the encounter, but Soroka said Spradlin threatened them at gunpoint.

The robbery happened around 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Route 79 and Halseyville Road. Spradlin fled the scene in a vehicle, leading to an hours long search for him by NYS troopers, Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department and Ithaca police officers, along with their K9 unit.  A NYSP helicopter was also called to the scene to search the area.

Ithaca police said officers stopped a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s in a parking lot on Elmira Road, where Spradlin was taken into custody.

He is in custody at the Tompkins County Jail and being held without bail.
