ITHACA, NY — As the snow continues to accumulate Sunday evening, the City of Ithaca advises residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Deputy Police Chief Vincent Monticello has said that emergency dispatchers are overwhelmed with traffic accidents.

According to Finger Lakes Weather, “the heaviest accumulations will occur during the nighttime hours, but accumulating snow will continue through most of Monday.”

The National Weather Services in Binghamton issued a lake effect snow warning for Tompkins County in effect through 7 p.m. Monday.

As of 10:36 p.m., very heavy snow is falling in a “near stationary band” in parts of the Finger Lakes and Twin Tiers, with snowfall rates between 1 – 1.5 inches per hour.

Snow accumulation may total 12 – 18 inches, says the NWS.

This is a developing story.
