ITHACA, N.Y. — Ithaca Police Department Chief of Police John R. Barber is pleased to announce that starting tomorrow, November 1st, IPD police officers have been approved to grow beards during the month of November to show support for cancer research and cancer awareness.

Additionally, female officers are approved to paint their fingernails grey or wear a gray ribbon in their hair. Gray is the color commonly associated with brain cancer awareness. This is part of a national initiative commonly referred to as “No Shave November”. IPD police officers are typically discouraged from growing beards or painting their fingernails grey; however Chief Barber approved the initiative as part of the cancer awareness effort.

Regarding this initiative, Chief Barber stated “I was recently approached by Officer Thomas DuPay who requested permission to conduct a fundraiser to benefit Officer Colin and his family to help offset some of their expenses. Officer DuPay proposed a well-known “No Shave November” event for IPD.

This event would authorize male IPD officers to grow a goatee or a beard and female officers to paint their fingernails gray or wear a gray ribbon in their hair during the month of November after making a donation. All proceeds will be donated to Officer Colin & his family. When I heard that this will directly benefit one of our own officers, I immediately approved the fundraiser. My thanks to Officer Thomas DuPay and the officers who have welcomed Colin and his family into our law enforcement family.”

City of Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick stated “This is a terrific idea that will raise awareness for cancer research and it enhances our support for Officer Colin and his family. Many thanks to Officer DuPay and Chief Barber for this wonderful initiative

To participate in No Shave November officers are encouraged to make the following donations: $25.00 to grow a goatee

  • $50.00 to grow a beard
  • $25.00 to paint nails gray
  • $25.00 to wear gray ribbon in hair, gray headband, or gray barrette

Officers who do not wish to participate are welcome to make a donation if they chose.
