ITHACA, NY – The Ithaca City School District is the recipient of the 2016 Presidential Citation Award for music. ICSD is one of two school districts honored with this distinguished award this year.
The NYSSMA® Presidential Citation Award is given to districts that act as models for music education programs in New York State and provide a well-rounded music program at all levels. ICSD has been building the music program over the last five years. Student participation is up over 120 percent.
“There has been an increase in the outreach to our community,” said David Brown, ICSD Chief Administration Officer and Director of Fine & Performing Arts. “Music education is available to everyone. Anyone who can’t afford a musical instrument is provided one by the district. We have one of the strongest collaborators in the Fine Arts Booster Group. That’s why we are getting this award – because of the initiatives, teaching, and collaborations. I would like to thank all of the music faculty and staff that made this recognition possible.”
NYSSMA® President Michael Brownell stated, “Your music program is one to be emulated. It stresses high quality, is well balanced, innovative, and enjoys supports from the administration, parents, and community. We hope that this award shows in some small way, the esteem in which the state’s music educators hold the ICSD and the appreciation that NYSSMA® has for your district’s support of a quality music program. We applaud your contribution to music education and to the students of your district.”
“In the face of fiscal constraints, our community has maintained a commitment to an exceptional music program,” said ICSD Superintendent Luvelle Brown. “We are proud of this special recognition from NYSSMA.”
