ITHACA, N.Y. — People plan on gathering in support of former Cornell University student Peter Mesko, who was sentenced to five years in prison in 2015 for drunkenly sexually abusing a woman.

After a mistrial, Mesko was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree burglary on Jan. 29. Mesko was also charged with rape.

On March 30, 2013, Mesko entered a sleeping woman’s room and was accused of raping her as she slept. But the jury was deadlocked and unable to reach a verdict on this charge.

According to a flyer about the event, the rally is happening at the Wayne County Courthouse in Honesdale, Pennsylvania from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. The rally is meant “to bring awareness to our corrupt legal system and undeniable presence of prosecutorial misconduct” organizers say.

Jeffrey Deskovic, who spent 16 years in prison after being falsely convicted of raping, beating and murdering a classmate in 1990, will be speaking at the event.

A Facebook group entitled Justice for Pete’s Sake, has just over 8o likes as of Friday afternoon.
