ITHACA, N.Y. — After years or debate and planning, GreenStar Cooperative Market was finally able to open its doors to the public at its third location in Collegetown Tuesday — and it’s completely glorious.
College students (and locals who appreciate the walkable Collgetown area) have been left with convenient shopping options akin to a gas station for decades. GreenStar is the first grocery store to open in the area with selections that include fresh fruit and vegetables, ready-to-eat meals and options for people with dietary restrictions, such as vegan cheese and gluten free products.
The Ithaca Voice popped in to the store Wednesday morning to check it out and compiled the following list of what we’re most excited about in the store.
1) Coffee and bagels
Reasonably priced coffee and bagels are arguably the most important two things to students. And while Collegetown has always had a great selection of shops for students (Collegetown Bagels, we love you. Starbucks, we tolerate you.) a self-serve area that lets patrons get in and out of a store with a quality product has been very much needed.
2) A place to chill and work
Coming in at a close third for what students and locals need is a place to sit, work and enjoy fore aforementioned coffee and bagels.
3) Prepared meals
People love burritos. They love pizza. They love meeting friends for burgers. But people also love freshly cooked, healthy meals that they can eat while doing homework and watching Netflix in pajamas. GreenStar in Collegetown is offering just those kinds of meals.
4) Still adding to the stockpile
If you swung by the new GreenStar Tuesday and thought you saw everything you needed, think again. People were seen stocking the shelves with new products throughout the store Wednesday morning.
5) Is that sushi? (Spoiler: it is. )
Again, time is important. Having a grab-and-go sushi area is a welcome relief from fast food or arranging to spend 20 minutes waiting on food at a restaurant.
Not only does the new GreenStar offer fresh fruit and veggies, but they are offering a wide selection and are not charging people $2 for an apple.
