ITHACA, NY – Recently, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office has received several fraud complaints. The complaints consist of owing Federal or New York State taxes and overdue student loan payments.

The callers threaten arrest warrants will be issued if the victim does not pay the stated amount of money being requested. The callers identify themselves as working for the IRS or other federal or local government agencies that have been tasked to collect the debt.

The caller requests payment in the form of gift cards and provides local store locations to purchase the cards at. Once the victim has purchased the gift cards, the caller request the information off the gift cards.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s wants to remind everyone that the IRS will NOT contact you and request payment over the telephone. Furthermore, no financial loan office will accept gift cards as payment.
