Passers-by have no doubt noticed the signage of a store closing sale adorned over the bright blue street front at 308 East Seneca Street in downtown Ithaca. Standard Art Supply had been at the location for almost five years, replacing what had been Providence Hobby.
According to a description of the store on the Downtown Ithaca business directory, “Standard Art Supply & Souvenir is dedicated to artists. In both store and studio they strive to inspire ingenuity and produce artwork that results from good ideas equipped with the right tools.”
“Just moving on,” replied a man working at the shop when inquired as to why the store was shutting its doors. Even with the planned closure, it appeared to be business as usual, as he worked with a set of canvas frames, and a small black dog watched on with mild interest.
A sign in the window from Warren Real Estate noted that the space was for lease. A redevelopment project involving the building is in the early stages, and went to the city planning board for concept discussion in April. But, it was noted at the meeting that any actual construction is at least a couple of years out. The online real estate listing states that the 1,000 square-foot space is available for $1,750/month.
