On June 12th, 2016 at about 1:05 a.m., Deputies responded to the 600 Block of Wards Blvd. East in the Town of Newfield for a report of a speeding motorist in the area. Deputies also located a license plate left from the vehicle in question.  A short time later, Deputies located the speeding vehicle.  The vehicle swerved into the direction of a uniformed deputy who was standing in the roadway but did not strike him.  The operator failed to comply with the deputy’s order and left the area. Deputies located the occupants of the vehicle at an address in the Town of Newfield later in the morning.  The vehicle was also recovered in a private field near Douglas Road and noticeable damage was reported.

Deputies identified the driver of the vehicle as Devin M Austen (Age 17 of Newfield).  Austen was charged with Grand Larceny 4th Degree, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree, and Menacing 2nd Degree.  He was issued an appearance ticket and is set to appear in the Town of Newfield Court on June 21st, at 1:00PM.  Deputies learned that Austen stole the vehicle from a vehicle repair shop in the Town of Newfield on the previous day.

The two additional occupants were identified and confirmed to be juveniles.  They were charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle and were given appearance tickets to the Tompkins County Court.  No further information is available regarding the juveniles at this time.

The investigation continues and further charges are pending.
