Antwan Brooks, 25, died at the West Village Apartments.
Ithaca police were called at 5:59 a.m. to the 600 block of Chestnut Street regarding a patient suffering from a cardiac arrest, Officer Jamie Williamson said.
The case is internally sealed because it is being investigated, meaning no other information can be released or confirmed about the incident as of Tuesday afternoon, he said.
Brooks’ mother, Linette Knox, said her son suffered from addiction. She declined to discuss his addiction yet, but said she is willing to do so at another time.
She invited the public to attend a vigil for Brooks happening at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the skate park near the intersection of South Meadow and Wood streets.
Knox said she is encouraging people to wear red, her son’s favorite color, and asking people to bring balloons and candles.
She said she is being open about how her son died because she hopes it might encourage someone to get treatment for opioid addiction, which she said needs to be addressed by officials.
“It may save one life,” she said about being public about her son’s death.
A gofundme page has been set up by a family member to help Brooks’ family with funeral expenses. To donate, click here.
