The Ithaca Police Department is pursuing new leads in an open 1987 Homicide Case.

On the morning of February 12, 1987 the body of David W. Malcom age 26 of Ithaca was discovered in the office at the Red Cross Shelter located at 717 W. Court Street in the City of Ithaca. David was a staff member at the Red Cross Shelter who reported for work the previous day to work his 24 hour shift. Ithaca Police believed he was murdered during the afternoon on February 11, 1987.

Starting last September, the Ithaca Police Department conducted a review of the case with assistance from the New York State Police Troop C Major Crimes Unit and Tompkins County District Attorney Gwen Wilkinson.

The Cornell University and Tompkins Cortland Community College Police Departments assisted the Ithaca Police Department with locating some of the witnesses who, in 1987, were college students.

Over 100 leads were investigated over the past 9 months by Ithaca Police and the NYSP.

Several witnesses have been interviewed in several states and as far away as the west coast by Ithaca Police. Several police agencies outside of Tompkins County have assisted Ithaca Police and NYSP with the investigation.

A suspect who resides outside of the Tompkins County Area has been identified. His name is not being released as he has not been charged at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

The Ithaca Police Department encourages anyone who may have information to contact the Ithaca Police Investigative Division at 607-272- 9973 and press option # 1.
