ITHACA, NY – DeWitt Middle School’s Destination Imagination team, The Flaming Fries, invites you to a family-friendly Move-a-Thon on Saturday, May 7th from 4-6pm in the DeWitt gym to raise funds needed for the team’s trip to Destination Imagination Global Finals.

Please join us to exercise along with all 31 movement videos the team created for their Destination Imagination service project.  There is a suggested admission cost of $5-$10 per family.  There will be concessions (pizza, snacks, baked goods, drinks) for sale, a silent auction featuring many family-friendly items, and face painting. Cornell’s mascot, Touchdown the Bear, and Moreland the Magician will attend.

For the 2015-2016 school year, The Flaming Fries team completed Destination Imagination’s Service Learning Challenge by completing a service project aimed to help our community stay active and healthy when the weather makes it difficult to be active outdoors.  The seven team members created 31 movement videos running almost 90 minutes starring many local celebrities, including Mayor Svante Myrick, Ithaca City School District Superintendent Luvelle Brown, Hilby the Skinny German Juggling Boy, Moreland the Magician, Cornell’s mascot (Touchdown the Bear), Nate the Great, Cornell Bhangra, The Blind Spots, Vitamin L, members of the Cornell Men’s Hockey team, and Cornell’s On Tap Dance Troupe.

The Flaming Fries would like to express our appreciation to Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) for the Red and Gold Grant, which allowed the team to print 1,000 movement posters for our community.  The team also thanks our community’s support of our journey to Global Finals thus far, especially the Ithaca City School District, as well as Purity Ice Cream, Acting Out New York, and the Ellis Hollow Community Center.  Our team continues to fundraise to cover expenses associated with attending Global Finals.

The Flaming Fries placed first in the New York State Destination Imagination tournament, which took place on Saturday, April 9th in Binghamton, NY.  The team will proudly represent the Ithaca community and New York State at Global Finals in Knoxville, TN this month where more than 8000 students from 45 states and 14 countries will compete.  The team is comprised of DeWitt 6th graders Owen Beigel, Liala Cryer, Liam Hansen, Emma Loiacono, and Owen Loiacono, and Caroline Elementary 5th graders Miles Ackerman and Owen Rhudy.

Destination Imagination is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage, and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts, and service learning.
