The crash happened around 4:19 p.m. near the intersection of Auburn Road and East Lansing Road, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Deputies said that the 2006 Ford bus was traveling north on Auburn Road and made a wide right turn over the center lines while trying to transition onto East Lansing Road. The 2015 Volvo garbage truck was right behind the bus and made an illegal pass around it in anticipation of the turn.

When the vehicles crashed, a large diesel fuel tank spilled onto the roadway.  The Department of Environmental Conservation coordinated for a private company to clean the spill.

Police said in the news release, “Further action will be required in the near future by the contractor to ensure material has been properly and safely removed.”

Bus driver Alfred J. Lurcock, 55, of Ithaca was cited for making an improper right turn. Garbage truck driver Randy C. Pomichter, 43, of Herkimer County in the village of Poland, was cited for improper passing. Further charges are pending as the investigation continues.

New York State Police, Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Lansing Fire Department assisted the TCSO at the scene.
