New York State Police were called to the wreck around 9:12 p.m. on West Danby and Brown roads, a Tompkins County 911 dispatcher said.

Sgt. Michael Soroka, of NYS police in Ithaca, said Zachery E. Smyser, 24, was driving his vehicle the wrong way — south on a northbound lane — when a vehicle swerved out of the way to avoid hitting him. An oncoming tractor trailer being driven by Robert C. Dalola, 66, was apparently unable to avoid hitting Smyser’s vehicle.

Smyser was transported in a Guthrie Air helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania. A hospital official said Sunday afternoon that Smyser is currently in the ICU in stable condition.

No tickets have been issued yet and police said they are still investigating the incident.

Bangs Ambulance, the Newfield Fire Company and Danby Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the scene.
