ITHACA, N.Y. — A man fled Ithaca after allegedly shooting a person at the Chestnut Hill Apartments on New Year’s Day, police said.

Christopher L. Wright, 25, was taken into custody while traveling near New York City Friday and was charged with felony first-degree assault. He’s remanded to the Tompkins County Jail without bail as of Saturday morning.
The man who was shot is still in critical condition, officials said.
Police released the following information about the incident:
On January 1, 2016 at approximately 5:48AM, members of the Ithaca Police Department responded to the Chestnut Hill Apartments, Building J following a 911 hang up call reporting that someone had been shot inside one of the apartments.
When Officers arrived they located a male victim who had sustained gunshot wounds to his body. The male was transported by Bangs Ambulance to CMC where he was then airlifted to a regional trauma center in critical condition.
Ithaca Police assisted by Investigators from the New York State Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department spent New Year’s Day following up on numerous leads. The suspect was located later in the morning by the New York State Police on the NYS Thruway outside of New York City as a result of a broadcast that had been put out earlier by Ithaca Police.
The suspect was transported back to Ithaca by Ithaca Police Investigators. The suspect was charged with Assault in the First Degree a Class B Felony.
The defendant was arraigned in Ithaca City Court by Judge Scott Miller and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail on no bail.
Also assisting with the investigation was the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit.
