Donald E Van Schoick, 60, is charged with a felony for third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and misdemeanors for second-degree menacing and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police released the following information about the incident Saturday night:
On September 26, 2015 the Ithaca Police Department responded to the parking lot of 310 Floral Ave., the Cedar Creek apartments for a report of a subject with a weapon making threats to harm people. Prior to the arrival of Officers, it was reported that an older white male wearing a white T-shirt and gray shorts was in possession of a taser and was threatening children and adults who were outside.
Upon arrival, Officers located a person matching the description given. When the male saw that Officers had arrived, he attempted to hide an object that he was holding in his hand by secreting it in a wheelchair that was occupied by an elderly woman.
The woman immediately turned the object over to police. The object appeared to be a flashlight, but was found to be a fully functional taser in disguise.
The male suspect was identified as Donald Van Schoick, and was arrested on scene. The taser was seized and secured as evidence. Witnesses in the area reported that Van Schoick had been sparking the taser while walking towards children and their parents and making threatening remarks to them.
Van Schoick was arraigned in the Ithaca City Court and was remanded without bail to the Tompkins County Jail.
