TOMPKINS COUNTY—One month from today, the community will have a second reason to celebrate at the reopening of the Ithaca Commons.

On Friday, Aug. 28 Tompkins County will hold Giving Is Gorges, a county-wide day of giving. The 24-hour online challenge celebrates local nonprofits and affirms our community’s culture of giving. More than 50 area nonprofits have already signed up for the event.

The event will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 28 and continue until midnight that night. Any local nonprofits that wish to participate can register using the GiveGab website. Local residents can encourage their favorite nonprofits to participate and donate on Aug. 28. Community partners include the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, the Finger Lakes Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the United Way of Tompkins County.

“It’s high time for the ‘Giving Day’ concept to come to Tompkins County, and we at Habitat for Humanity are thrilled to participate in Giving Is Gorges,” said Shannon MacCarrick, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties.

“As a small nonprofit, we spend lots of our time fundraising solo,” she said. “The act of pulling together the Tompkins nonprofit community toward one day of support will allow our missions to shine, showing the collective impact that we have on the community.  Individually we all do great work, but together, we are an even more powerful force for good.”

The event will bring together not just philanthropists but even citizens with just a few extra dollars to give, helping them find a nonprofit that meets their giving goals. This community approach will embody the event’s slogan, “We love local. We live local. We give local.”
