LANSING, N.Y. — A teenager allegedly stole an ATV and led police on a chase through Lansing before crashing the vehicle Thursday evening, police said.

James L. Coyne, 18, is charged with felony third-degree criminal mischief, misdemeanor third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer and other traffic violations.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office released the following information about the incident:

On 08/20/2015 at about 5:51PM, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police were dispatched to 40 Catherwood Road in the Village of Lansing for a subject operating an ATV in the parking lot.  

The subject was also found to be operating a stolen ATV.  The subject failed to comply with deputies to stop and fled on various roadways. During the pursuit, the subject intentionally struck a marked Sheriff’s Patrol Unit and continued to fail to yield to deputies.

The subject eventually crashed the ATV at the intersection of Scofield Road and Peruville Road in the Town of Lansing.  No injuries were reported.  

Deputies identified the operator as JAMES L COYNE (age 18 of Lansing).  

He was charged with Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree (E Felony), Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer 3rd Degree (A Misd.), and other numerous traffic violations.  

He is set to appear in the Town of Lansing Court on 09/03/2015 at 7:00PM.  State Police may have pending charges.
