ITHACA, N.Y. — A city board voted unanimously Monday night to help advance a proposed Texas Roadhouse chain for Route 13 in the city of Ithaca.

The Board of Public Works passed a resolution designating that a portion of the property “has no current public works purpose,” which means that it can be used for the national steakhouse’s Ithaca branch.

As previously reported in the Ithaca Voice, Texas Roadhouse is seeking to put the 7,163 sq ft restaurant on the southwest corner of the retail complex at 719-725 South Meadow Street.

The site, currently a vacant commercial parcel, was formerly home to Cellular One before the one-story building was demolished in 2013.

“The City has not previously demanded that the strip of land be conveyed to the city, and the Superintendent of Public Works has no plans to use the strip of land for street purposes,” says the Board of Public Works resolution passed unanimously Monday night.

The steakhouse is seeking to take about six months to build, with construction starting in September 2015 and completion expected in March 2016.

The Ithaca Voice’s Brian Crandall has reported that the construction cost, which includes landscaping and parking lot improvements, is estimated at about $1.3 million. About 30 construction jobs are being estimated in the application, as well as 40 permanent jobs when the restaurant opens.

Here’s a description of the restaurant chain from the corporate website:

“Texas Roadhouse opened its doors in 1993. Since then, the company has grown to more than 430 locations in 49 states and five international locations in the Middle East. Texas Roadhouse is famous for its hand-cut steaks, fall-off-the-bone ribs, made-from-scratch sides, and fresh-baked bread.”

While some may lament another chain coming to Ithaca, at least the Texas Roadhouse in Horseheads appears to be popular — with a 4.5 stars score on Yelp.

Here are three Yelp reviews from that nearby Texas Roadhouse, about 40 minutes from Ithaca:

“Absolute fantastic!!! Came last week and again tonight. Everything cooked perfectly and tasted great!!! Nothing at all like outback, that was a mistake going there!! Waitresses were great, tonight being the most attentive! Full and satisfied! Tons of food for a great price! Love it!

“I had the BBQ chicken with sweet potatoes w/marshmallow melted on top which was really good!  I will say steaks, chicken and ribs are some the better among the chain restaurants.  The food is good but nothing great just like most chains in my opinion.  Still a fun experience especially if you have kids they will love it.”

“My favorite place for ribs. Really delicious food! Great atmosphere – family friendly even though there is a bar. I believe 95% of the clientele are there for the food not the bar.”
