ITHACA, N.Y. — A glass panel overhanging the Ithaca Commons’ new pavilion shattered three days after it was installed.

The panel broke on Friday, the morning after the Gunpoets’ concert on the Commons last Thursday, says Michael Kuo, project manager.

Replacing the panel won’t cost the city a dime, Kuo said. “It’s not something we did … I see no reason why the city would be responsible for the replacement of that,” Kuo said.

Here’s a couple photos of workers replacing the panel on Monday:

Kuo said he had no idea why the panel broke on Friday, but noted that it was being replaced today. The project’s main contractor, Vacri Construction Corp, sub-contracted out the glass installation to three separate companies: 1) A company to design the glass; 2) A company that manufactured the glass; 3) A company to install the glass.

One of those companies — if not some combination of them — will be responsible for paying back the cost of the broken glass, Kuo said.

The glass over the Ithaca Commons’ Bernie Milton Pavilion was installed on August 4, Kuo said. He said it’s unclear why the panel broke “and that they may never figure it out.”
