ITHACA, N.Y. — The Friends of the Tompkins County Public Library will expand their hours for accepting community donations for August and September.  In addition to Tuesday and Saturday mornings, 9 am – 12 noon, the Friends will be accepting donations of gently used books and other items on Thursdays, 9 am – noon, at the big green warehouse at 509 Esty, Ithaca.  These expanded hours remain in effect through September 19, the last day to drop off books before the Fall Sale.

The Booksale has been an Ithaca institution for over 60 years.  After each Sale, the Friends start with an empty warehouse and begin accepting community donations of gently used books, games, audio books, LPs, DVDs, posters, CDs, and other items.  Clare Green, one of the Sale’s Co-Coordinators, notes, “Our ‘rough sorters’ sort the books into over 70 categories, and our category sorters take over to further organize the books.  All that effort and organization by over 200 terrific volunteers makes for a great shopping experience.”   Sale proceeds provide major support to the Library and also benefit the Finger Lakes Library System and organizations working for literacy in Tompkins County.

Community members contribute to the Sales’ success in three ways:  donating books and other items, shopping at the Sales, and volunteering both during the Sales and during the year.  Check out volunteering when you drop off donations, and pick up a bookmark to remind you of dates and times for the Fall Sale.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the Fall Sale dates, October 10-12, 17-19, and 24-27.  Sale hours are 10 am – 8 am except for October 10, when the Sale opens at 8 am.  Check out the Sale website,, for donation guidelines and more information, and pick up a bookmark reminder when you drop off your donations.
