The Ithaca Housing Authority hosts the event every year, with support from the Ithaca Police Department, as a means to bring together people in the community, Executive Director Brenda Westfall said.

She said the housing authority teams up with IPD to break down communication barriers between officers and the community in an effort to make neighborhoods safer.

“It’s basically the community coming together,” she said. “We like to see people come out and invest in their community.”

The event takes place in more than 16,000 locations throughout the country.

In Ithaca, the housing authority and volunteers hosted barbecues, games, music, giveaways and provided access to information about public services.
