“Yes, we are closing,” said a Gap employee, who did not give her name because she was not authorized to speak with the media. “Our last day of business will be July 26.”

NewsChannel 9 WSYR in Syracuse broke the news on Tuesday that the Gap at the Shops of Ithaca Mall would be closing. The station also reported that the Gap at the Syracuse area Destiny USA is slated to close.

Gap Inc. announced in June that it will be closing 175 stores in North America. CNN Money recently reported that Gap had a “dismal” first sales quarter in 2015 and that online sales were also down 2 percent.

An official with Gap Inc. at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco said in an interview Tuesday taht he could not confirm the Ithaca store’s closure. The official directed reporters to check for updates at GapInc.com, which as of Tuesday afternoon had not appeared to disclose the status of the Ithaca mall’s Gap.

The Gap employee in Ithaca who spoke Tuesday on the condition of anonymity said the store has about 25 workers who will soon face unemployment. (The Ithaca Voice was unable to verify this number.)

“It’s really hard for some people here,” the employee said. “I would love to say more.”
