The company is named the “R. Williams Residential & Commercial Asphalt Services,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

So far, elderly people in Lansing have been the “primary targets” in the scam, according to law enforcement.

“Please be advised: The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office would like to warn community members of a scam that has been currently plaguing the area,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

“If anyone has any information about the R. Williams Company please contact our non-emergency line and ask to speak to an officer to file a report; 607-272-2444. Thank you for your assistance.”

The sheriff’s office also included a link to the following story, which details the 11 warning signs in asphalt contracting: http://www.precisionmaint.com/BEWARE-OF-SCAMS.aspx.
