New Roots Charter School invites the public to attend its Spring Auction on May 8th from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Clinton House at 116 N. Cayuga Street in Ithaca. Proceeds will benefit Spring “intensive” courses, in-depth, week-long academic courses that immerse students in real-world learning.
This spring, New Roots students can earn science credit for an aquatic ecology course on Cayuga Lake or a hands-on permaculture course, social studies credit for a study of the natural and culture history of Ithaca, physical education credit for a life guarding certificate class at the YMCA, or music credit while learning a steel drum reggae samba rhythm for this year’s Ithaca Festival Parade. Other credit-bearing intensives include: Mock Trial, Filmmaking, Cob Oven Construction, Geo-Cashing Natural Navigation, Afro-Caribbean Dance, and Project Impact, a course that engages students in service learning throughout our community.
“If I had a dollar for every adult who has said, “I want to go back to high school” when I describe the course offerings for what we call Intensive Week we wouldn’t have to worry about funding these incredible learning opportunities,” says Rebecca Cutter, Community Outreach Coordinator for New Roots Charter School.
Items donated to date include tuition to three 2-week camp sessions at Camp Cody (for middle school students) in New Hampshire, a night at Frogs Way B&B at EcoVillage, a bundle of pastured-pork cuts from Cayuta Sun Farm, original art work from The Dream Weaver Art Studio, a Junior Membership (ages 13-17) at the YMCA, State Theatre tickets, and a gift certificate from Home Green Home.
Bidding for larger ticket items will begin online, via the New Roots website on Monday April 27th and will continue through the event. If you would like to donate an auction item please contact Rebecca at 607-882-9220, ext. 207 or drop by the front desk of the school.
