Michael J. Dmochowski, 18, of Lockport, died in the accident on Route 96/34 (Ithaca Road) on Friday. Dmochowski had been visiting Ithaca College, according to multiple reports.
Dmochowski was a beloved student whose death has shocked friends, family and teachers at Lockport High School, which is just east of the city of Niagara Falls.
Here’s the state police account of the two-vehicle crash:
Around 9:42 p.m., Dmochowski was driving in a 2012 Chevy Camro when he drifted into the northbound lane of traffic and collided “head on” into a pick-up truck.
That pickup truck, a 2013 F-150, was being driven by Gary H. Holmes, 40, of Spencer. Holmes was taken to Robert Packer Hospital by ambulance for foot and ankle injuries.
Dmochowski was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tioga County Coroner, Stu Bennett, and sent to Lourdes Hospital for an autopsy. Pathologist Dr. Michael Zur concluded that Dmochowski died as a result of severe head trauma and hemorrhaging.
Alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as factors in the crash.
New York State Police Troop C Collision Reconstruction Unit was sent to the scene to reconstruct the fatal collision. The investigation is ongoing.
