Ithaca, N.Y. — “Ithaca, New York” is trending on Facebook after the local visitors’ bureau website prompted visitors to go to Key West, Florida because of “this ridiculously stupid winter.”

About 25 people are sharing the story on Facebook every 15 minutes, according to Facebook’s live feed.
Another 10 people are sharing the story every 15 minutes on Twitter.
The message above greeted viewers who went to VisitIthaca.com, but appears to have been taken down at the time of this posting. The joke went viral after it was picked up by national news outlets such as NPR, CNN and USAToday.
Facebook’s trending lists are personalized based on topics popular across Facebook as well as Liked pages and user location. Other topics that were trending include Jessica Williams’ denial that she will be replacing Jon Stewart on the Daily Show and a federal judge’s blocking of President Obama’s executive immigration action.
The Ithaca Voice covered the story on Sunday; it was picked up by Syracuse.com on Monday and then took off like wildfire.
Yesterday, we reported that the joke had made national news. Now, however, it’s safe to say that the reach of this story is international — with news outlets in the UK also following suit.
