Ithaca, N.Y. — Ithaca police are warning that a scammer is making calls in the area asking for donations to a police union that does not exist.

The caller says the money will go to the families of officers killed in the line of duty. But the charity in the call does not exist.

The Ithaca Police Department has received “several reports” of the scam, according to a press release. “The phone number is defunct and the website, www.charitiesnys.com, does not exist,” the press release says.

To donate to a real cause, go to the Officer Down Memorial Page at www.odmp.org.

“Unfortunately, every year countless police officers are tragically killed in the line of duty. Please do not let this scam deter you from honoring their ultimate sacrifice,” Chief John Barber said in a press release.
