The victim has been identified as Douglas Koban, of Endicott.
Koban was taken to the Cayuga Medical Center after he was hit in the head by a weight during the warm-up of the weight-throwing event, the university said in a statement. Koban was standing in the caged area of Barton Hall when the accident happened.
Foul play is not suspected. Cornell police are still investigating what happened. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. during a large invitational track meet.
Koban was subcontracted out to officiate the event, the university said. He was immediately treated by trainers and other EMTs after the accident happened.
“The incident is still under investigation by Cornell Police, but officials are ruling the incident as an accident,” the statement said.
