Ithaca, N.Y. — The Ithaca Farmers’ Market hosted the 17th annual “International Rutabaga Curling World Championship” on Saturday.

Contestants took turns throwing the cruciferous vegetable down the central pavilion of the beloved marketplace. Hundreds of people were in attendance for the event, which included judges, referees, emcees and — as you’ll see below — even mascots.

Mayor Svante Myrick tossed the “Ceremonial First Rutabaga” at the event.

“Why? What’s your city doing today?,” he joked on Twitter.

But Myrick’s bowl was overshadowed by a talking rutabaga, whose puntastic performance was one for the ages:

We counted 17 puns, though we realize we may have missed some.

Allison Usavage had a photo booth set up at the market; check out her website at whatsgoodithaca.com.

We’ll see you next year!
