Contestants took turns throwing the cruciferous vegetable down the central pavilion of the beloved marketplace. Hundreds of people were in attendance for the event, which included judges, referees, emcees and — as you’ll see below — even mascots.
Mayor Svante Myrick tossed the “Ceremonial First Rutabaga” at the event.
“Why? What’s your city doing today?,” he joked on Twitter.
But Myrick’s bowl was overshadowed by a talking rutabaga, whose puntastic performance was one for the ages:
We counted 17 puns, though we realize we may have missed some.

We’ll see you next year!
