Ithaca, N.Y. — Cornell has earned the top spot of any college in the country — though probably not the one it was seeking.

Gawker’s Sam Biddle has published a ranking of the top safety schools in the country.

Cornell came in first. Ouch.

Biddle describes the concept of safety schools thusly:

A “safety school” is a euphemism for an institution of higher learning that’s a backup for wealthy high school students who are too dumb to go to Harvard.

Rounding up the top 10 in Biddle’s list were:

10. Hobart and William Smith

9. Boston College

8. Kenyon

7. College of Charleston

6. Johns Hopkins

5. St. Andrews (UK)

4. George Washington

3. Emory

2. Hamilton

It’s unclear if the ranking will cause the Lynah Faithful to rethink its regular chant, “Safety school!,” to opposing teams. We’re guessing it’s unlikely.
