Ithaca, N.Y. — An event at Lot 10 in downtown Ithaca Monday evening highlighted Latino culture in the Ithaca community. The celebration brought Latino music, Cuban food, and dance together at the bar.
Mayor Svante Myrick was there and proclaimed a Latino Heritage Month for the city.
Cultura Ithaca and the Latino Civic Association collaborated to host the event. Cultura Ithaca is an organization dedicated to creating events and activities that educate and express Latino culture, art and entertainment.
“We are very interested in having Latino heritage be more of an official event that happens in Ithaca,” said Carolina Osorio Gil, director of Cultura Ithaca.
Local musicians and dancers, including DJ Split Image, performed at Lot 10 afterwards.
Cultura will be hosting the Cine con CULTURA Film Festival at Cinemapolis. Every Tuesday and Thursday this month and into October you can see a film of Latin origin at Cinemapolis on East Green Street.
Correction: A previous story incorrectly stated the name and dates of the film festival.
There will also be speakers at each film.
On October 3rd CSMA on East State Street will be presenting the New Latin@ American Art event. The artwork displayed will be from 13 local Latino artists.
At the event, Mayor Myrick also spoke about the two Latino murals opening in Ithaca.
“These two murals are among the most beautiful we’ve ever had,” Myrick said.
Jennifer Ospina, artist of one of the new murals says her work should be finished in 1-2 months.
The second mural has opened on the Seneca Street garage and displays a mother holding her baby. Myrick says he is pushing for as many murals to be built, as quickly as he can.
