A statement from Ithaca Voice Editor Jeff Stein:
On Monday night, The Ithaca Voice broke the news that Cornell would be revealing its next president on Tuesday. The story was based on two anonymous but highly reliable sources and not confirmed by the university.
The next morning, The Ithaca Journal and The Cornell Daily Sun reported that there would be a press conference following a special meeting of the Cornell Board of Trustees.
We contacted a university spokesperson to see if The Ithaca Voice could attend the press conference, which was also attended by Time Warner Cable News and WENY, among others.
“The Trustees meeting is a closed session … The press conference that follows is by invitation,” John Carberry, a university spokesperson, wrote in an email. “We will post additional materials on our website shortly after noon.”
The Voice responded by asking for an explanation of why it had not been invited.
Carberry said the university would not be commenting on the matter.
