Ithaca, N.Y. — Ithaca will fly its its flags at half mast Friday in honor of the Rochester police officer who was shot and killed while pursuing a suspect this week.

Officer Daryl Pierson died after gunfire erupted in the city Wednesday night. Pierson was a father and husband.

A suspect with a lengthy criminal history, Thomas Johnson III, is in police custody.

Mayor Svante Myrick gave the order for all city facilities to lower their flags on Friday.

“(Pierson) lost his life while serving his community,” Myrick said.

“His death is a tragedy, and a reminder of the dangers faced by those who protect and serve us every day. My prayers are with his family today, and with the City of Rochester.”
