Lansing, N.Y. — The dirt bike and ATV four-wheeler traveled in the same direction down Decamp Road Friday night. They’d left from the same residence.

At some point, the rider of the dirt bike did a U-turn and began heading back toward the residence. The operator of the ATV four-wheeler apparently didn’t realize.

As the dirt bike headed back east it and the ATV “struck head on,” Senior Investigator Jody Coombes of the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office said in an interview Monday morning.

“There was no illumination device on either vehicle,” Coombes said. “It’s a very terrible accident … we’re still working the investigation, but at this point and time it appears it is an accident.”

Lynn Eastman III, 19, of Lansing, was killed in the crash. Two others — Billy Radcliffe, 21; and Zachary Radcliffe, 19 — were taken to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

Both Radcliffes are on life-support and in critical condition, Investigator Coombes said Monday morning.

Coombes emphasized that the crash appears to have been accident. There’s no pending charges, Coombes said.

“There’s no intention of trying to hit each other; it doesn’t appear like that at all,” Coombes said.
