Antwerp, N.Y. — Troopers in Jefferson County found an Ithaca man with 200 bags of heroin on Thursday, according to state police.

Richard P. Hairston, 30, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Hairston was on county Route 26 in the Jefferson County town of Antwerp when police conducted a traffic stop. A press release did not say why police decided to search him for drugs.

Hairston was found with less than 25 grams of marijuana in addition to the 200 heroin bags, state police said.

He was arraigned in Antwerp Town Court and sent to the Jefferson County jail. Hairston will be in court on Aug. 12.

The St. Lawrence County Drug Task Force, United States Customs and Border Protection and the Gouverneur Police Department all assisted the investigation, police said.
