Ithaca, N.Y. — Cake baker and decorator Amy Gaines started snapping photos of Ithaca on her iPhone after moving here from Buffalo a little more than a year ago.

“Since my move, I find myself looking a little closer, moving a little slower and appreciating a little more,” said Gaines, owner of

Gaines’ method is simple. She takes all the photos with her iPhone and then edits their saturation, warmth, detail and contrast, she says.

How does she know when editing job is done?

Gaines said she plays with the photos “…until I am able to achieve the best all around representation of what my brain sees in comparison to the average eye.”

Gaines said: “I try to see art and beauty in things and places others may not; a lot of times I go for walks with the sole purpose of finding it.”

“I have found so much artistic inspiration in day-to-day downtown Ithaca.”

We thank Gaines for letting us share her photographs. You can find her website here.
