Trumansburg, N.Y. — A child in Trumansburg was flown by a medical helicopter to a pediatric trauma center after falling about 12 feet Tuesday night, according to Trumansburg officials.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on the 1500 block of Taughannock Boulevard/Route 89. The child fell from the deck of a house overlooking the lake.

Emergency crews quickly established a landing zone for the chopper in Taughannock Park, said Brian Snyder, a paramedic with Trumansburg EMS. They had to contend with Tuesday night’s storm, which had knocked power out for much of the area.

“With lack of power, it wasn’t easy,” Snyder said. Responders were able to use their portable lights instead, according to Snyder.

It isn’t yet clear how the incident occurred, Snyder said. Snyder said he didn’t think the incident was related to Tuesday night’s thunderstorms, calling it “just a lousy coincidence.”

Snyder said he called Upstate University Hospital Wednesday morning but was unable to learn the patient’s condition.

We’ll let you know if we learn more about the child’s condition or how the incident occurred.
