Ithaca, N.Y. – A bicyclist was severely injured Friday night after hitting the mirror of a parked car and crashing onto the pavement, according to the Ithaca Fire Department.

The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on the 300 block of University Avenue, on Ithaca’s East Hill, Lt. Thomas Basher said.

The man, who was wearing a helmet, suffered injuries to his head and ribs. He was going down University Avenue, which runs on a steep decline from Cornell’s West Campus to downtown Ithaca.

Firefighters arriving on scene stabilized the bicyclist’s injuries, while others established a landing zone for a medical helicopter at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. The bicyclist was then airlifted to the hospital.

Lt. Basher said he didn’t know the patient’s condition and that the fire department is investigating the incident.
