Newfield, N.Y. — A man has been accused of having sexual contact with a child younger than 11 in a Newfield home, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office said.

Michael Russell, 40, was charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, on Friday.

Russell was arraigned in front of Judge Payne in Newfield Town Court. He has since been sent to jail on $20,000 cash bail.

Russell was arrested by Tompkins County sheriff’s deputies and members of the Tompkins County Department of Social Services.

Russell will appear in court again on July 1.

Sheriff Lansing reports that on 6/27/2014, deputies from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Tompkins County Department of Social Services with a home visit in the Town of Newfield.   Deputies learned that a male subject by the name of Michael Russell, age 40 had recently moved into the residence.  It is alleged that Russell had inappropriate sexual contact with a child under the age of eleven at the residence.  

As a result of the investigation, Michael Russell has been charged with Sexual Abuse in the first degree, a class D Felony.   Russell was transported to the Town of Newfield Court where he was arraigned before Judge Payne.   Russell was remanded to the Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash or $50,000 bail/bond.   He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Newfield Court on 07/01/2014 at 1600 HRS.
