Ten years after the Ithaca Police Department dissolved its K9 unit, the department’s newest recruit, a Czech German Shepard named Bert, was sworn in Monday.

Bert is about a year and three months old and will be trained as a bomb and gun powder sniffing dog. Bert was taken in by the police department for the purpose of reestablishing the K9 unit, according to a press release.
