A seven-minute video obtained by The Ithaca Voice shows the direct aftermath of the crash on the Ithaca Commons Friday. It gives a window into the emotionally raw and chaotic scene, with people screaming, crying and running in multiple directions.

We have decided not to publish the video. We made that decision in part out of concern for the privacy of bystanders and victims involved, and in part because we concluded the video had no crucial relevance to understanding the tragedy.

Since the fatal crash, which took the life of a young mother, the Ithaca community has searched for answers to a long list of pressing questions.

These include: How could this have been prevented? Should there have been better signs? Could there have been a protective barrier that stopped the truck? Why did the driver’s brakes fail?

Those are all questions we will try to answer in the coming days and weeks. But, in our judgment, the video answered none of them. The video does not explain how the accident occurred or show what could have been done differently to save a young woman’s life.

We hope you respect our decision. If not, please feel free to email us with your questions; if you wish to write in with criticisms of the decision, we will publish them.
